[ it's percy's seventeenth birthday. but more importantly? it's his one-year anniversary with annabeth.
he can't help sweating it. thanks to hermes, they got to spend their one month anniversary having a fancy dinner in paris. but since then? percy got, like, kidnapped by prophecy (aka: hera), lost his memory, regained his memory, reunited with annabeth in time for a big group quest and her solo death quest, fell into tartarus with her, and managed to survive the end of the war with gaea with her. which, uh, kind of seems like it's all been downhill since their epic underwater kiss, basically. plus, there aren't any gods who owe him any favors he can cash in (though you'd think -- you'd think helping to save the world a second time would net some favors).
so as far as percy's concerned? he's lucky she seems ready to celebrate their anniversary rather than find herself a better boyfriend. he's pretty sure athena is still in camp find a better boyfriend, and has probably said so to annabeth since their battle in athens.
he iris messages her to meet him by the beach that evening, at montauk, where he'll have a nice picnic set up by the water. nothing too special, honestly: it's some of their favorite takeout. but tyson insisted on helping, crafting beautiful and magical lights to dot the area; and the sea is smooth and calm, warm, as if poseidon's also lending a hand. which is possible. thanks, dad. hopefully there won't be any, like, sea serpents surfacing tonight (aGAIN).
he grins when he sees, bright, says oh-so-eloquently, ] Hey.
[ at this point, Annabeth would settle for no interruptions: of the prophetic kind, or the monster kind, or the Godly kind. she's sure her standards are likely to be as appallingly low as possible, and had the last year been anything but what it has been, she'd probably be appalled at herself for this.
but in the span of the past months, she's lost Percy, got him back just in time for her mother to send her on a quest no one else had survived, faced such horrors that she thought she could never face anything worse, only for the world and the Gods to prove that yes, there could certainly be something far, far worse. and even after surviving Tartarus, even after Gaia had been defeated, there had been so much to do they'd barely had the time to be... this.
normal teenagers, spending their anniversary together.
(alright, so maybe the normal is a stretch at best, an outright lie at worst, but this is about as normal as it can get for them, and she'll take what she can get.)
the fact that they can do this, that Percy's set this all up, it's enough to make warmth blossom in her chest as she walks closer. ] Hi, [ she responds with a smile, because sometimes it's alright to sound like a regular teenager.
that lasts for about a second, before she takes a look around them, at the lights. ] Did Tyson make those? [ because who else could it have been? then, ] They're pretty.
